Signal from Noise: Our Insight on AI

nvisia is an award-winning software development partner driving competitive edge for clients.

Everywhere you turn lately, news and conversations revolve around AI and ChatGPT. It can be hard to tell what’s real and what’s just hype. At nvisia, we know part of our job is to help sort these things out for our clients. Here’s what’s happening.

It’s real this time.

AI has been around for a while. We're all familiar with Siri and Alexa. Chatbots are commonplace, and predictive analytics are in use in many organizations. We've been talking about it for years, wondering how to use it. So why all the hype now?

Advancements in generative AI and the ease-of-use of these tools have truly put the power of AI into the hands of millions. It no longer requires advanced degrees and large budgets to build something using this technology. It's fairly simple to take advantage of and apply to our own enterprise use cases. It's "crossed the chasm" to be a technology that will enjoy general use.

The first companies to market will use point solutions and custom models.

For the next several years, companies can innovate ahead of their peers using off-the-shelf point solutions and custom AI models. Those relying on enterprise-grade core solutions to have these features will be last to market.

You will see a plethora of products come to the market in the next several years serving various industries and use cases. This will be a volatile space. As you identify your business case for your own use case, consider that the life of the system you build may be quite short, 5-7 years seems hopeful. Be sure it will provide its ROI in that time.

The biggest challenge will be integration.

Integrating the point solutions within your existing workflows and operationalizing the models with your data will be more challenging than building the models themselves.

AI is becoming easy. Your environment may not be so easy to work within. Getting your data to the model, incorporating the action into your systems and reengineering your business processes will likely be the bulk of the effort.

Digital transformation and DevSecOps are a huge leg up.

A renewed sense of urgency should exist for companies lagging with digital transformation, agile processes and DevSecOps. The change you’ve been preparing to adapt to is here, but don't worry -there will be more. Better late than never definitely applies here.

For those companies who have transformed to have flexible systems and elite DevOps practices, the integration challenges mentioned above will be much simpler, and you will be the first to market.

The best solutions provide efficiency and streamlined UX.

Efficiency is the biggest driver for AI use cases right now. Customer/user experience is the must-have addition to make that successful.

Imagine a claims process in an insurance company. There is a lot of potential for AI automation to make this much simpler for both customers and claims adjusters. But the real differentiator for the customer will always be the experience. Do they understand the process and data presented to them? Does it inspire trust in your organization? Can they reach a person when they need to?

AI tooling will impact IT processes, too.

Software development teams should embrace high-velocity code generation techniques combined with advanced people and architectural skills. It will be quicker, more cost effective and higher quality to go back-and-forth with ChatGPT than an offshore team. All our working models will change.

This is something the technicians at nvisia have a special eye on. We have our own skunkworks underway, exploring how these tools can be used in a secure manner to build proprietary solutions. Expect to see us leveraging our architectural talent to provide guidance on these topics soon.
